Experiments

The Tilley Timber Project is a multidisciplinary concern with the main elements aimed towards scientific data gathering, dissemination and interpretation. As part of the experimental element of the project, we intend to set up an educational programme that involves data gathering by school children aged between 10 and 13. This programme will involve recording the stresses of various timber trusses and A-frames. The rationale of this experimentation is to test the load bearings on timber-framed buildings, in particular roofing materials such as thatch and stone flags. It is clear that some of structural reinforcement was required when roofing materials were changed and when the angle of the pitch of the roof was reduced.
