OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT
The principal objective of the Project Time Maps. Real Communities, Virtual Worlds, Experimented Pasts [PN II-ID-PCE-2011-3-0245] is to create a synthesis between art (as technê) and science, and to elaborate a methodology for its study and practical application to contemporary society. Another objective is the elaboration of an experimental basis for the rediscovery and reinsertion into society of ancient technologies, and the elaboration of a set of activities for the wide dissemination of the project results. The project’s intermediary objectives are the provision of an educational framework and tools and the set-up of a communications and collaboration network to promote the immaterial heritage in association with institutions and communities from Romania and abroad.

ESTIMATED RESULTS
The Project intends, through a series of experiments, to recover the knowhow of ancient technologies, and therefore to generate a new attitude in art through their reintroduction in the contemporary world, thus also promoting the synthesis between art and science. The social role of the project is to help disadvantaged or rural or urban communities lacking visibility, by helping them promote their past, and educating the younger generation to discover and preserve the local immaterial heritage. A goal of the project is to set up a European network that will promote a new paradigm for approaching the Past.

Through joining science and art, the TimeMaps project highlights certain lesser known archaeological sites, and offers new interpretations of other, better known, locations thus enhancing the observers’ perception of the Past. Sometimes, the clearer vision of the Past can be achieved through the recovery and sharing of some of the technologies of the time. Doing so, it contributes to the revitalization of contemporary arts and crafts, and provides new options to communities interested in reviewing their economic development strategies. One such concrete example is that of the VĂDASTRA site, in the Oltenia region of southern Romania.
The Time Maps project was initiated for the community of VĂDASTRA and was later transferred to other communities in Romania. The collaboration with two communities from Portugal extended the scope of the project, and thereafter other European communities were invited to present their scientific and educational strategies to create a European platform which will generate a new paradigm for approaching the Past through a synthesis of science, art/technê, and education.
