The house in Vadastra restored by the Mayour of Vadastra

The Mayour of Vadastra, Eng. Sorin Radulescu financed the autumn campaign of the Time Maps Project.
The house in Vadastra was restored and new furniture and accommodation facilities were added.
Several archaeological and art experiments were carried between 3rd and 8th October 2018.

Time Maps project 2014 Summer Campaign

Given the need of a process approach and the expansion of the last year’s workshop initiative on August 02 – 03, 2014, several new meetings took place in the Vădastra village within the TimeMaps summer campaigns. The intention of these meetings was to facilitate the demonstration and experimentation of the learning applications for mobile devices (smartphone/ tablet PCs) by a new generation of students from the local primary school. Therefore, a QR barcode was installed at the entrance of the school in order for the students to be able to access the Augmented Reality (AR) application. The working group was formed by the students Andra Tania Ciu (8th grade), Lorena Danciu and Mihaela Cococi (7th grade), accompanied by the Principal of the school, Mrs. Laura Voicu. The presentations were made by eng. Livia Stefan at the UNA’s campaign site and they were comprised of: 1) explanations on the use of the TimeMaps website as an educational instrument, focused on the presentation of the Virtual Reality based digital museums; 2) the TimeMaps blogs; 3) the “TimeMaps Scan”, an AR application that recognises the images of several objects and hence it can display video films, images and descriptions that relates to the real objects; 4) the “TimeMaps Geo Layers”, a geographical AR application that recognises the historical locations and it can display video films, images and description in relation to those locations. The latter application, “TimeMaps Geo Layers”, was used by 3 students on a trial base. Through this experiment the students explored the area of a prehistoric house and the Roman villa rustica. In addition, it was important to explain to the students the use of the QR codes, as these codes are the tools that allow one to rapidly access the mobile applications.
Finally, during this campaign, the lector Adrian Şerbănescu performed an art installation in order to reveal the Roman road in the Vădastra village through real landmarks (photos by Dragoș Gheorghiu).

Workshop, Vadastra, November 24, 2013

On 24th of November 2013, professor Dragos Gheorghiu with a group of collaborators from NUA Bucharest and with the help of Mrs. Laura Voicu, the principal of Vadastra School, organized in Vadastra a learning and demonstration workshop. At this event, Mr. Sorin Rădulescu – the mayor of Vadastra village and Paula Ruscu, a mayor’s councilor, were also present.
The workshop comprised several parallel short-time work sessions:

an e-learning session via Skype Bucharest-Vadastra was held by teaching assistant Alexandra Rusu, regarding weaving techniques with the vertical loom. The children showed what they had worked since the previous workshop;

an interactive lesson about narratology held by Elena Radoi, PHD student. She used childen’s words and experience to make her point about this subject;

demonstations of two mobile applications which use Augmented Reality (AR) to help children discover and learn about local cultural heritage.

This was performed by professor Gheorghiu and eng. Livia Stefan. Two techniques were demonstrated: visual-based AR and location-based AR. First, the applications were explained theoretically in the classroom, then the visual-based AR was shown by scanning a QR code and images of a prehistoric house and a Roman vila rustica. Afterwards, the location-based AR was shown outdoors at the experimental camp of NUA. The children were shown and explained some archaeological artefacts, the experimental prehistoric house and the Roman vila rustica, and the mobile application which displayed texts, images, 3D models and videos in relation with this place of historic interest. The children used themselves the smartphone and learned how to use the application.
